History About Vermont

In 1535 French explorer Jacques Carter is the first Europeon to explore Vermont. Soon explorers discover many things, such as Samuel de Champlain finding Lake Champlain. In 1666 forts are being built and the first on in Vermont was Fort Ste. Anne on Isle LaMotte. The French and British build many more forts. In 1764 Britan claimed Vermont,New Hampshire and New York. The States imediatly resisted. There was a lot of violence between the States and Britain at this time and until the Revolution when Britain was the common enemy.

In 1777 Vermont declares itself a republic in Windsor. Later in 1791 Vermont becomes the 14th state. In 1805 Montpilier was chosen as the capitol. During the Civil War no state was more supportive of the Union than Vermont. Vermonters strongly favored Lincoln over Stephan Doughlas who was born in Vermont. Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery. Still as the Civil War neared, just like many other Northern states, Vermont was not prepared militarily. In the summer of 1860 when the governor ordered soldiers only 900 men appeared. The war broke out on April 12th, 1861 when the rebel cannon fired at Fort Sumter.

Lincoln called for more soldiers and Vermont responded. Soon we were fighting battles and funerals for loved ones were becoming more frequent. At our most costly battle on the Gettysberg field more than 25,000 soldiers from the Union or Confederate were wounded or dead. On the fourth of July,1863, a day after the Gettysberg battle, the confederate surrendered to Uylesses S. Grant.
